POLK T50 REVIEWS: HOME THEATER AND MUSIC FLOOR STANDING TOWER SPEAKER

Polk has built a reputation for producing high-quality speakers at a low cost over the years. In keeping with their tradition, they’ve unveiled their new floor-standing tower speaker T50, which, despite possessing all of the qualities of a high-end speaker, is reasonably priced.

The tower speaker features a silk-dome tweeter and a 6.25-inch composite driver with a long throw. In addition, it has two front-firing sub-bass radiators for deeper bass. Polk’s only property is Dynamic Balance technology, which has been used in all of them.

Furthermore, the ground-standing speaker has a sensitivity fee of 90 dB and a peak power rating of 150 watts. It also has a frequency range of 38 Hz-24kHz. The 36.2-inch speaker looks stylish and can complement any home decor thanks to its wooden vinyl finish.

1. Design:

The Polk speaker has a really appealing appearance and an MDF cabinet coated with a fantastic wooden vinyl end. It also includes a detachable grille for the safety of the drivers. The T50 speaker is quite large, measuring 7.75′′ wide by 36.25′′ high and 8.75′′ deep.

2. Radiators in brass:

The two drivers on the backside are passive radiators, which means they don’t have any wires connected to them and are designed to supplement the woofers. The radiators will provide better bass quality because they amplify bass vitality in the same way that a port does, but without the chuffing noise.

3. Impedance:

The T50 speaker has an impedance rating of 6 ohms. Despite the fact that 8 ohms would have been preferable, 6 ohms is not at all bad and should suffice.

If you’re unfamiliar with impedance, it’s the resistance your speaker provides to the electrical signal your amp sends to them. Impedance is critical to your amplifier because it must see some resistance to the power it sends; otherwise, it will burn out by constantly pumping out power.

4. Silk Dome Twitter:

A 1′′ silk dome Twitter has been used within the speaker to ensure a broad dispersion sample, implying a larger’sweet spot’ to work with.

Furthermore, the silk-the materials used in the tweeter sound warm and gentle and have been designed for high power handling. Furthermore, it adds stiffness and dampness to Twitter, allowing it to pump out volume without sacrificing accuracy.

5. Sensitivity:

The speaker has a sensitivity rating of 90 decibels. Is the sensitivity score, however, required? The sensitivity score of your speaker, on the other hand, tells you how loud it performs per watt.

To achieve the high volumes, a speaker with a low sensitivity score would require significantly more power. In summary, the higher a speaker’s sensitivity score, the better. Anything greater than 88 dB is considered an efficient sensitivity score.

6. Cabinet:

A cabinet is an important and necessary component of a standing ground speaker. The furniture-grade MDF cabinet, which is well-built and long-lasting, reduces distortion and resonance, allowing you to listen to your favorite music without interruption.

Furthermore, the vinyl wooden end and its lovely appearance will ensure that it does not detract from the beauty of your existing home décor.

POLK AUDIO T50 PERFORMANCE

I usually start my tower-speaker tests with music and then progress to movies near the end. In the case of the Polk T50, I did exactly the opposite because I spent the fall doing a lot of traveling—and nothing feels more relaxing after a long day on the road than sitting down to watch a movie with my Samsung projector (one of the old Joe Kane models) and a good audio system.

There’s a good reason why movies are more relaxing for me: with music I listen a lot deeper, start wanting to dig into the pile of LPs I’ve found at swap meets and used record stores, and maybe even go grab my bass and start lifting lines and licks. With movies, I open a beer, pop some popcorn, sit back, and barely move for at least 90 minutes.

With the T50s in my system, it was easy to relax and enjoy the movies without worrying about the sound. I watched Fury, the Brad Pitt WWII tank movie, partly because I expected the numerous explosions of the tanks’ 75mm rounds to tax the T50’s sole 6.5-inch woofer, but the speakers held up just fine, even with the volume on my Denon receiver turned up to +3 dB.

More importantly, I liked how natural the dialogue sounded and how clear it was. With one exception, which I’ll discuss below, the T50 appears to be up to the task of delivering slam-bang home theater sound.

I had to listen to “Matte Kudasai” from Levin Brothers three times to catch everything that was going on. The imaging on the percussion was the best part. I could feel the drumsticks on the snare head and the cymbals, and the occasional accents from chimes and shakers were as perfectly and precisely imaged as they could be between the speakers.

POLK AUDIO T50 DOWNSIDE

While the Polk T50‘s woofer didn’t choke on the cannon fire from Fury, it did struggle with the kick drum on the Whiplash trailer, which was also included on the same disc.

The woofer and passive radiators didn’t clearly distort or rattle, but they did sound compressed and stressed, as if they were telling me in their own little speaker driver language that if I was going to play stuff like this, I should really hook up a subwoofer.

Similarly, the bass solo on “Streets of Laredo” had the same effect on me. The T50s handled it, but not well; on the peaks, they compressed and got into a couple percent total harmonic distortion. So, as long as you’re not going to bombard the T50 with difficult material on a regular basis, it’s fine to use it without a subwoofer.

If you insist on listening to EDM or pipe organ music, invest in a subwoofer and high-pass filter the T50s at 60 or 80 Hz. The system will become louder and more audible.

CONCLUSION: POLK AUDIO T50

Simply put, the Polk Audio T50 is an excellent speaker. It can’t do everything that a well-designed, $2,000-per-pair speaker can, but it can do the majority of it.

A pair of T50s combined with a good little stereo receiver like the Onkyo TX-8020 would outperform any wireless speaker and any soundbar for less than $500. Add a good turntable, such as the $299 Pro-Ject Essential II, and a $200 DAC, and you’d have true audiophile sound for $1,000. That’s a difficult combination to overcome.

FAQs About Polk Audio T50

Is Polk Audio worth it?

The downside to Polk products is that they aren’t of the highest quality, and if you’re looking for a high-end sound system, it might be worth bumping up your budget a little. Polk speakers will satisfy the vast majority of people. However, they aren’t of high quality, so keep that in mind.

Is Polk Audio suitable for home theater use?

A surround-sound speaker system provides moviegoers with a home audio experience similar to what they hear in the theater. The Polk Signature Series was chosen as our favorite because it offers the best combination of performance, design, usability, and affordability.

Which is better Polk or JBL?

The JBL is better built, has a room correction feature, and performs better in the surrounds. Additionally, it supports more wireless playback options. Having said that, the Polk Audio has a larger soundstage and a one-of-a-kind adjustable dialogue enhancement feature.

Is Polk T series good?

The Polk Audio T-Series 5.1 Home Theater speaker collection is one of the best and most affordable systems available for meeting all of your requirements. It not only looks good, but it also sounds great and can handle anything you throw at it in terms of gaming, music, or movies.
