WHAT IS BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770 PRO STUDIO HEADPHONES?
Beyerdynamic is a well-known and well-respected name in the world of professional audio, having pioneered the modular studio dynamic headphone with the DT 100 model. The legacy of that model lives on in the form of the highly regarded closed-back DT 770 PRO studio headphones, which have been a top weapon of choice for producers, engineers, and broadcasters for nearly four decades.
The DT 770 PRO has recently been surpassed – but not replaced – by the newer, more expensive DT 700 PRO X model, but it continues to provide a satisfyingly neutral sound at an affordable price. The DT 770 PRO has a solid reputation as an affordable, high-performance closed-back studio reference monitor headphone that is trusted by artists and engineers all over the world.
It is handcrafted in Germany and trusted by artists and engineers all over the world. Professionals appreciate their transparent and detailed sound, decent isolation, modular construction, and squashy, comfortable velour-clad ear pads, which were designed primarily for use when recording instruments and vocals.
In the box you get the headset itself, together with a permanently-attached 3m straight cable terminating in a 3.5mm stereo minijack that can be converted to a standard 6.3mm jack via a bundled screw-on adapter. There's also a simple material drawstring pouch to give the cans some measure of protection when on the move.

BEYERDYNAMIC DESIGN, LAYOUT AND BUILD QUALITY
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO is not a gaming headset, but rather a classic design that we've all seen for years. Since its initial release, not much has changed. This studio headphone weighs approximately 270 grams, which is still reasonable by today's standards. Despite its plastic cup design, this is a high-quality closed-back headphone. Handmade in Germany, gentlemen.
The ear-pads are made with the same high-quality materials. They're made of soft foam that's been covered in velour. The thickness is adequate, with enough room for the average ear size. These are removable and even washable. One of the best pads for isolation and comfort.
In true Beyerdynamic fashion, the headband is detachable. Padding, on the other hand, is sufficient to brace the top of the cranium. The headband itself is designed to save weight, resulting in a good weight distribution. There's really nothing to complain about here. Because this is a proper studio monitor, it comes with a 3 meter long non-detachable cable. It has a kink-proof outer diameter of about 3.5mm, give or take.
Fit and comfort are exceptional with excellent flex due to the steel band’s design. Clamping force is surprisingly plush. Yes, not light nor tight. It is just perfect to keep the headphone in place on my 54cm cranium. It’s even super comfy with prescription glasses on. I kinda wish the band is aluminum though.
BEYERDYNAMIC TEST SETUP AND METHODOLOGY
Our test setup is based on a system with a Realtek ALC892 Codec that has been configured to output a flat sound signature. Microphone performance, on the other hand, is assessed using the same audio solution in a 34dB environment.
A SONY MDR-7506 studio headphone was used to take cross reference sampling – an ideal studio monitor for A/B testing. It's worth noting that we keep the Sound Pressure Level around 85dBA throughout the tests. Our main goals are to go over the gaming and overall performance of the audio solution in depth. The following tracks, movies, and games were used for the subjective tests:
Tracks:
- Caribbean Blue – Enya
- Hey Nineteen – Steely Dan
- Unfinished Sympathy – D2
- Axel F – Harold Faltermeyer
- Hotel California – Eagles
Games:
- Overwatch
- Battlefield 4
- The Witcher 3
Movies:
- Pacific Rim
- Mad Max: Fury Road
The vast world of audio solutions is subjective, and it is frequently a contentious debate among avid listeners. Some people prefer a lot of bass, while others prefer less bass and a richer mid-range or higher frequency range. In short, an audio solution may sound fantastic to one listener while sounding terrible to another.
BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770 PRO DRIVER QUALITY AND ISOLATION
Although audio solutions are mostly tested subjectively, they can still be tested for basic objective measurements. AudioCheck.net's Headphones and Earphones Benchmarking Test Files are assisting us in this endeavor.
Our tests revealed that the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO performed admirably. For example, isolation is rated at -54dB, which is on par with the majority of capable headsets we've tested. The deepest perceived frequency response is at 10Hz.
BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770 PRO SOUND SIGNATURE
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO appears to be a treble-oriented headphone right out of the box. However, upon opening my folder of bass titles, I discovered that this one truly packs a deep punch. When it comes to its general sound signature, we're looking at the word “V-shaped.”
The DT 770 PRO's lower frequency ranges are deep and powerful, with a natural bass decay that is appropriate for just about anything we have. While it isn't particularly muddy, it may obscure the midrange depending on the tracks, EQ settings, and source device.
To be honest, the middle ranges are similar to my MDRs, which are relatively flat. But I'm not complaining because I still enjoy neutral-sounding mids, especially when they're present whenever they're required. The upper band, on the other hand, is quite sibilant, even bright, but it doesn't lack any details that some sibilant gaming headphones do. This one is exactly what I'm looking for.
BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770 PRO IMAGING AND SOUNDSTAGE
Imaging is concerned with the spatial location of the audio sources, whereas soundstage is concerned with the depth and/or range that the audio solution can provide. Both are important in almost any situation and are especially important in games, where positional audio is king.
Considering its closed-back design, imaging on the DT 770 PRO is superb. For its design, the sound stage is also extremely wide. I can see why some gamers prefer this one with a jack-in over more expensive gaming headsets. Combine this with a capable microphone, and you've got yourself a competitive gaming solution.
BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770 PRO MICROPHONE PERFORMANCE
The audio solution's microphone quality is also evaluated. The Windows 10 Voice Recorder is assisting us with this test, with the microphone level set to 100%.
Because the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO lacks a microphone, it is recommended that you use a capable one. For the best possible setup, you could install a ModMic or get a nice desktop microphone.
DT 770 PRO SOFTWARE, LIGHTING AND SPECIAL FEATURES
The DT 770 PRO does not include any downloadable software or lighting, so you'll have to set everything up on your own. Having said that, it lacks none of the features required for studio monitors. This includes a 6.35mm jack and a cable that is nearly 10 feet long.
Certain DT 770 PRO parts are replaceable and ready to order directly from Beyerdynamic's website in true studio capable fashion – like beat em' up kind of fashion. This includes the pads as well as the headband. Easily the parts that necessitate a great deal of care due to their nature and materials.
CONCLUSION: Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO in 80 is a serious headphone that will appeal to both professionals and avid music listeners. It has a deep and powerful bass, relatively flat mids, and a bright top-end that lacks drama. More than enough to keep you occupied while working or even playing.
The DT 770 PRO is one over-engineered bad ass with German engineering backing it up. However, it is not indestructible. For example, the exposed cable leading to the correct channel is a close second for the least favorite AWG award. More rubber or protection in that area would be beneficial.
